Welcome to Pack 129

Creston, IowA Scouting

So you want to join Cub Scouts!

GREAT!

You've come to the right place.
It's real easy and it's never too late to start your adventure in becoming an Eagle, the ultimate goal in Scouting.

The things you're going find out on this page pertain to Pack 129 of Creston, Iowa and do not necessarily reflect a commonality with other Packs.

The first thing you need to do is contact any Cub Scout Leader or Committee member and let them know of your interest in joining and you will be put on the right track.   The contacts page can be found here, and the leadership page can be found here.   Of course, you can always show up at a meeting and get signed up that night.   It's that easy.

You'll need to fill out a youth application that comes with a fee.   More on that later.   You'll also need to fill out a health form.   This paperwork will stay on file for a year.

Now, on to the fee.   The registration fee for the year is $35, which gets you a handbook, a year's supscription to Boy's Life magazine, and pays for the BSA insurance.

There are other expenses to being in Cub Scouts that you need to be aware of.   Most of these can be offset by the fundraisers that we do throughout the year.   You'll hear about that when we talk about Pack Activities.

One required expendiature is the Cub Scout Uniform.   The cub scout shirt cost $35 which includes the cost of the insignia.   This is necessary for any boy to recieve their advancement awards and patches.

Other costs are broken down as follows:

A belt and buckle cost $9.   Some awards come in the form of belt loops which slip nicely on a Cub Scout Belt.

A baseball style hat is available for $13 and is purely optional.

A Neckerchief and Slide runs $14 for Webelos and $10 for all other Dens.   Each Den has their own Neckerchief and is needed to identify the Scout as a Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos.

Pack 129 does not want to scare anyone away with cost of Scouting.   We just feel it necessary to disclose everything up front.   And, there are the fundraisers to help pay for these things.

The next thing you need to do is go to the Bobcat page and learn what it takes to become a Cub Scout.

Every Cub Scout has to complete the Bobcat requirements and then the rest is determined by school grade.

It goes like this:

Tiger Cubs
Boys in the first grade, or age 7, are in a Tiger Den.   They work closely with an adult family member to accomplish activities in their handbook.   Upon completion, they will earn this Tiger badge.   Check out the Tiger page for more information on what's going on in the Tiger Den.

Wolf Cubs
Boys in the second grade, or are age 8, will be a member of a Wolf Den.   Wolves work in their handbooks to complete 12 achievements to earn the Wolf badge.   After that, Wolves can work on electives and earn Arrow Points to show their advancement.   To keep up on the Wolves, check out their page.

Bear Cubs
Third graders, or boys age 9, will be part of the Bear Den.   Bears work to complete 12 of 24 achievements to earn their badge.   After earning the badge, Bears can work on electives and earn Arrow Points to show their advancements.   Bears can be found here for more information on what the Den is doing.

Webelos
Fourth and Fifth graders, or, boys at least 10 years old, become Webelos.   These boys work on requirements to earn the Webelos Badge, twenty activity badges, and the Arrow of Light Award.   The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouts and is the only patch that can be worn on a Boy Scout Uniform when the boy crosses over.
Check out our Webelos here: Webelos.

The last thing we need to say here is about the Pack Activities.

Pack 129 likes to stay busy, but not too busy.   We don't want to burn anybody out.   Here is a list of activities.

Blue and Gold Banquet
Pinewood Derby
Space Derby
Raingutter Regatta
Day Camps
Family Campouts
Parades

Pack 129 also participates in:

Popcorn Sales in October is Pack 129's main fundraiser, but other opportunities do arise, so don't let the cost keep you away.   There's always a way to fit into Pack 129 and we'd love to have you.

I think that's about it for here.   For more information, contact the Cubmaster as mentioned above, or check out the Rules and Forms page.
